Unemployed? 8 books you should be reading now:


This is the second article in a series of articles on being unemployed. Check out the other series articles on: How to tackle the job search and Resume tips & tricks. As you go through the search for a new job, that search needs to be your #1 priority. It’s now your full time job and your efforts should be focused there. Now in your spare time, head to the library, your goodwill store or any bookstore for these great reads, to give your career a boost while expanding on your perspectives: 1. The First 90 Days by Michael D. Watkins. This book gives you plenty of direction on how to be successful immediately, when you start your new job. I highly recommend that everyone should read this book, whether you’re going into a new job, changing roles in the same company, or looking to make improvements in your existing role. 2. Fierce Conversations by Susan Scott. This gem will provide you with techniques on how to improve the conversations in your life and in your work, so that you can work through the difficult times while making significant improvements to what’s already working well. 3. Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson. This is a simple little story that shows you how to deal with change so that you can enjoy less stress and more success in your work and your life. 4. The Art of Happiness at Work by the Dalai Lama. Working through a conversational question and answer style, this book explores three levels of focus that you should have when looking at your work: what do you need to survive, how are you focusing on advancement and understanding your work as a higher purpose within your life. 5. GO Put Your Strengths to Work by Marcus Buckingham. I’m a firm believer that everyone should have a strengths-based approach to their career that focuses on using more of their strengths on a daily basis. This book reinforces that thinking and provides 6 powerful steps to achieve outstanding performance at work. 6. Rising Strong by Brene Brown. You’ve experienced a setback. You might even consider it a failure that you’re unemployed. This book talks about the vulnerability behind difficult situations, the courage it takes to face them and how to get back up when you’ve fallen. 7. Awaken the Giant Within by Anthony Robbins. If you’re looking for more ways to tackle your mental and emotional wellbeing, this book is it. He helps you to look at situations in a new light and to understand you’re actions and reactions. Then he gives you tools to change your destiny. 8. The 4 Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss. This book will have you question your current ideals and norms, challenging you to up your game and take back control of your working life.
