When best intentions are squashed by others.
The Story:
I was talking with a client a few days ago about the uncertainty in his organization. He’s not sure if he’ll have a job going forward. This is weighing heavily on him, of course. Yet he still has so much that he wants to accomplish in this role. He wants to prove to the decision makers that he’s valuable and not the one that should be cut. But how does he push ahead with his initiatives, with the looming uncertainty? Sound familiar? We talked about what was really important to him and how he wanted to make a difference. He can’t change or control the uncertainty, but he can move forward with the best of intentions. With that, a plan was born and he found a renewed excitement to lean into his role and responsibilities, bringing more of what he wanted and not letting the negative energy within the organization affect him. I received an email from a client today. Things did not go well at all. The plan came crashing down. It wasn’t received as expected and how the client is disheartened, once again. Another setback for sure. Or is it? The Learning: There’s always a learning, a lesson, a take away, if you ask the right questions and are willing to honestly answer them. Try these… What are three things that you are happy with, or worked well, with your actions? What are three learnings that you now have, based on the occurrences/responses? And what are the three actions that are next for you, based on your learnings and new information? (if there's more than three, great... but... no less!) Simply, I like to think of it this way: You were here... You took actions... and now, with new information, You can reset and take more actions. Think of it as a circle that never ends.. you learn, you adjust, you try again, you learn, you adjust, you try again… it continues to repeat, for our entire lives. It’s up to you to decide if you keep reliving the same path, or choose to change your trajectory and create a new path, a new circle of life for yourself.
